10 Facts Everyone Should Know About Minesweepers 2019

Minesweepers International Competition at IROS2019

Many impressive events were held this year, milestones towards our community responsibility throughout the Minesweepers 2019 challenges, in this article you will get to know all of them.

1. Minesweepers is an international robotic competition on humanitarian demining that aims at motivating researchers and developers to work on innovative solutions for this serious problem.

Egypt has been listed as the largest country most contaminated by landmines in the world. It’s the fifth country with the most antipersonnel landmines.

2- In 2019, it was the 8th year for the outdoor (Mainstream Competition) and the 1st year for the indoor (Special Competition) versions.

3- The competition theme was to make a Tele-operated or autonomous robot that can detect the surface and buried mines, collect the surface mines manually or automatically and make a map to show the mines positions and the state of the mines (surface or buried). The robot has to be able to navigate through a rough environment that mimics a real minefield.

4- In August 2019 at the American University in Cairo “AUC” where the event took place and more than 60 teams have participated in the competition, 39 teams from the junior category and 25 teams from the academia category in Egypt.

5- The competition took place in one of the biggest international conferences in robotics and intelligent systems IROS 2019 that was held at The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel, Macau, China.

6- 70 teams, +600 participants from 8 different countries participated in Minesweepers from different local and regional teams around the world to join Minesweepers 2019 International Competition.

7- Only 17 teams, +150 participants from 6 different countries were qualified for the final phase in IROS 2019 in Macau.
